The OneSimCard eSIM

In addition to our regular plastic SIM cards, OneSimCard now offers eSIMs.

eSIM cards (known also as embedded SIM cards or eUICC SIMs) are soldered directly to the device printed circuit board and, unlike regular SIM cards, are not removable or replaceable by the user.  The advantages of e SIMS, especially for M2M / IoT devices are numerous. As eSIMs require up to 92% less space within the device when compared to regular SIMs, there is more available space for other components or to further decrease the size of the device itself.   In addition, as e SIMs are soldered within the device, they can withstand high temperatures and vibrations much better than regular SIM cards. This feature make eSIMs or eUICC SIMs  especially useful in devices serving mobile IoT applications such a connected vehicles or in any device installed close to engines or any other heat emitting machinery.   But, the most important advantage of eSIMs is the way in which they are programmed.

M2M / IoT eSIMs are often installed in devices which are placed in very remote and not easily accessible locations such as deep under a truck dashboard. As the user cannot easily access the device, there must be an easy initial way for M2M e SIMs  to communicate with the outside world. eSIM can be provided pre-programmed to the manufacturer with the Service Provider network profile loaded. Service Providers can remotely program or re-program eSIMs (embedded SIMs)  over the air by providing an operational profile. The operational profile contains all the necessary subscriber information.  Service Providers are also able to reprogram eSIMs, so they can easily and remotely migrate a customer to their services by installing  a new operational profile. This a very important advantage as the cost and effort required to retrieve and change SIM cards in hundreds or thousands of remote devices is quite significant. This cost and effort is entirely eliminated by the use of e SIM cards.

A separate feature of eSIMs is that Service Providers can also add an additional operational profile to the eSIM because e SIM cards allow for the usage of multiple International Mobile Subscriber Identities or  IMSIs.  IMSIs  are  usually 15 digit numbers and serve as a unique indentifying number for GSM service subscribers. The IMSI number is compose of 2 parts which indentify both the GSM network where the subscriber holds their account and the subscriber’s unique identification number. Usage of multiple IMSI numbers are especially interesting for mobile devices which cross borders. The device user is able to utilize 2 or more different operational profiles for their devices.  Those operational profiles could be with a domestic Service Provider and additional international roaming Service Providers thereby creating both cost savings and better coverage.  As embedded SIM cards are able to switch seamlessly between IMSIs, a device crossing borders could be automatically switched from the regular domestic carrier to an international roaming carrier (such as OneSimCard)  as soon as the  device is registered abroad.  All  IMSI profiles are  housed on the embedded SIM and the customer would seamlessly enjoy outstanding rates and service both domestically and internationally.
